"The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King" Receives The Golden Globe
by Anonymous

Houston, TX January 28 2004--As the motion picture awards season kicks-in to high gear, everyone and their uncle is making predictions as to the winners of the more prestigious trophies that tangibly result in enhanced box office success. Did you know that The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King was actually made a 7-to-1 favorite to walk off with the Golden Globe as the best dramatic movie of 2003?

And with everyone and their uncle presenting awards these days...the result of each award-giving body professing to occupy a special niche in moviedom...just keeping track of all the accolades can be a full time job.

Indeed, a full time job is just what SocDolager Productions has made of it each year since 1982. Virtually every single calendar day...not just during the gold rush...founder Socrates Dolager researches the opinions offered on motion pictures in every corner of the world, and translates these opinions into statistics that result in an objective ranking of every flick taken seriously and viewed by enough "experts" to meet minimum requirements.

Refreshing, and refreshingly accurate, Dolager includes the movie-going public as one of the "experts" in his source material.

Each movie passing muster receives an official batting average, complete with enough decimal places to minimize ties in most cases. Simply put, and without knowledge of baseball a prerequisite, a movie achieving a .300 batting average is precisely the same as a movie receiving 3 stars (000) in a 4-star ranking system.

Moreover, each movie's batting average is subject to change as new opinions are offered. Much as the stock market rises and falls daily, movies rise and fall in Soc Dolager's rankings in tune with the cutting edge of the thoughts expressed by today's generation. And unlike other sources, Soc Dolager excludes his personal opinions from the process. His goal is total objectivity.

The odds makers are correct and the Golden Globe was presented to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King during the ceremonies on January 25; justice was served for the first time since 1999. Not since American Beauty captured the trophy last century has the actual best picture gone home with trophy.

Here are the Golden Globe nominees, along with Soc Dolager’s rankings for the Best Dramatic Picture of 2003:

    1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King    .369    (3.69 stars out of 4)
    2. Mystic River                    .344    (3.44 stars out of 4)
    3. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World    .339    (3.39 stars out of 4)
    4. Seabiscuit                        .310    (3.10 stars out of 4)
    5. Cold Mountain                    .296    (2.96 stars out of 4)

Here's hoping the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences does not overlook American Splendor (.356) or The Fog of War (.350) when announcing its nominations for Best Picture of the Year. While it’s too late for the Golden Globes, due diligence indicates each has earned consideration from the Academy, regardless of box office potential.

And, unless things change drastically over the next month, here's hoping Oscar goes home with The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King. It IS the Best Picture of 2003, and should be judged so by anyone's standards.

Stay tuned.
